Son of God, King of Israel

Series: The Kingdom

February 22, 2009 | David Crosby
Passage: John 1:43-51

The fourth gospel differs in many ways from the other three. John enriches and expands our understanding of the life and ministry of Jesus by including events and teachings not mentioned elsewhere.

John alone records the call of Jesus to Philip and Nathanael. Philip hears the call first and responds by finding Nathanael. Philip is an eager beaver. Even this early he believes that Jesus of Nazareth, "the son of Joseph," is the Promised One.
Nathanael's retort is classic: "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" (John 1:46). The unlikely nature of Jesus as Messiah and these boys as his disciples is impressed upon us at every turn.

Jesus reveals knowledge about Nathanael that startles him, and he confesses, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel" (John 1:49). These are revolutionary words not only spiritually but also politically. The upstart rabbi, Jesus, with his small cadre of disciples, is early on identified as the Son of God. Later this title will be used in mockery.

Nathanael also calls Jesus the "King of Israel." Jesus comes preaching the Kingdom of God. His disciples come preaching "King Jesus." The title "King of Israel" is associated with the title "Christ," God's Anointed One. Jesus was mocked on the cross as "King of Israel" (Mark 15:32).

The disciples give Jesus the proper titles, but they do not know yet what they really mean. Kings do not die on crosses. These are titles that elevate, not humiliate. They will soon learn what it means to follow such a Messiah as this, "wounded for our transgressions" (Isaiah 53:5).
