Political Temptations

Series: The Kingdom

March 08, 2009 | David Crosby
Passage: Luke 4:5-8

Jesus was proclaiming and bringing the kingdom of God on this earth. He was seeking to establish and expand the rule of God in the hearts of people.

Why would it not be helpful to control all the earthly kingdoms of this world? This seems like a viable strategy for world transformation—bringing all the kingdoms under the rightful king.

Satan is the “prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2). He has a certain dominion. Some have questioned whether he could deliver on this promise to Jesus, but I suspect that he could have done so. I take these temptations at face value because I believe they represented compelling alternatives to the way of the cross--opportunities presented to him that in some ways appeared appropriate and even exciting.

A single caveat stood between Jesus and control of the kingdoms of this world. He had to worship Satan. Apparently, Satan was demanding a single bow from Jesus, an acknowledgment of the worthiness of this Prince.

How many good-hearted Christian soldiers, engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the forces that destroy human lives, have wished for the seat of power? How many have judged a single concession to evil a small price to pay for dominion with such opportunity for doing good?
